Finding George's Next Chapter, Door by Door

George and his family found me ten years ago through a house I had listed. That home was not the right fit, but our search led to a place in Kent that was. We stayed in touch the way you do with people who become more than clients.

Life was sending him in a new direction. After a divorce and ten years in the same home, he was ready for a fresh start. He needed to move forward, to find something that fit the person he had become. Selling a house that held a decade of memories and finding the place where his next chapter would begin.

George did not just get the house ready to sell. He packed it up. He cleaned it out. He threw out things he did not need or want. He drove to the dump, to Salvation Army, you name it. George taught himself how to downsize — packing, sorting, donating, and letting go of what no longer fit his next chapter. He even drove his ex's stuff to Arizona in between working and getting his own things sorted. George did it all himself, with a time crunch bearing down on him.

We found a neighborhood he could picture himself in. Only one problem: it was 2023, the market was hot, and nothing was listed there. Nothing that we could find, anyway.

So I put on my walking shoes. I printed marketing materials and door hangers, and I started knocking. Introducing myself, explaining what I was looking for, and asking the question most people are too polite to ask: "Have you ever had any thoughts of selling?"

Door after door, the answer was no. On the twenty-fourth door, without either of us knowing it yet, George's world was about to change.

We were on a clock. George's house had 4 offers and went pending within 6 days, sold at 2.5% over asking price. He had to move quickly so he would not end up couch-surfing at a friend's place for weeks. From the door knock to closing, everything moved fast because it had to.

I invited George to see the property. He said yes. Completely, without hesitation. From there, we worked through price and terms that made sense for everyone, got through inspection, and made it to closing. Then, celebration.

Here is the part of George's story that still makes me smile. His new neighborhood had something his old one did not: a dog park with a regular walking schedule, and George had a dog named Bonsai.

Bonsai made the introductions. George made friends. And somewhere along the way, walking the same paths at the same time most days, George met Tina, who is now his wife.

He came to me looking for a house. He found a neighborhood, a community, and eventually, a new chapter that included all of it.

This is exactly why I do not stop at what is listed. If there is a neighborhood you can picture yourself in, I will go find out what is possible there. Door by door, if that is what it takes. You never know what is waiting on the other side of a knock.

Less house. More life. Sometimes, a lot more than you expected.
